A Leap Forward in Early Childhood Education Wages

A Leap Forward in Early Childhood Education Wages

In a significant development for the early childhood education sector, approximately 12,000 educators are on track to receive a 10% pay rise before Christmas, thanks to the finalisation of a groundbreaking multi-employer bargaining agreement. This agreement, led by the United Workers Union, is a crucial step in addressing the challenges of workforce retention and growth within the industry. The wage increase will not only improve the financial stability of educators but also attract new talent to the field, ultimately enhancing the quality of education provided to children.

An optimistic future for Child Care workers

With the projected pay rise starting in December, along with an additional 5% increase in December 2025, many educators and their families are hopeful about the positive impact on their financial stability. This wage increase is not just about financial gain; it symbolises empowerment and a brighter future for educators and their families. It acknowledges the value of these professionals and instils confidence and motivation to provide the best education for young children.

Understanding the Provider Requirements

Providers must apply for government assistance as part of the multi-employer bargaining agreement to facilitate the upcoming wage increase for early childhood educators. Grant applications for this financial support are set to open in October 2024, and the wage increase will officially take effect in December 2024. To qualify for the funding, providers must meet specific conditions, including limiting fee growth to no more than 4.4% in the next year, engaging staff through a workplace agreement that aligns with grant requirements, and ensuring that all funding received is passed on as increased wages for eligible educators. This structured approach aims to ensure that the financial benefits reach the educators who are vital to the industry while encouraging providers to maintain affordable services for families. There are a few conditions that providers must meet:

  1. They must limit fee growth to no more than 4.4% over the next 12 months.
  2. They need to engage staff through a workplace agreement that meets grant requirements.
  3. They must be a Centre Based Day Care like Goodstart Early Learning or Busy Bees or a Family Day Care like The Infants’ Home Family Day Care or VIP Family Day Care.
  4. Finally, they must ensure that all funding is passed on to eligible educators as increased wages.
