Course Structure

To achieve a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care, a total of seventeen (17) units of competency must be completed; fifteen (15) core units, plus two (2) elective units. This course accepts Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as a way for students to receive credit for their previous education and experience.

Work Placement Requirements

To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of least 160 hours of work in a regulated children’s education and care service in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.

Course Entry Requirements

The Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care consists of a range of practical tasks. To meet workplace experience and job role expectations, students should be physically, mentally and emotionally healthy to meet duty of care obligations. For instance, it’s essential for a student to be able to respond appropriately to children’s needs, but equally important is the ability to remain calm in high-stress situations. This emotional resilience is a key requirement in the field. Additionally, students should be able to interact and communicate appropriately in situations of difficulty or danger. A reasonable fitness level is also necessary to cope with physical demands such as standing, lifting, bending, twisting, and reaching.

Students will need to be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18 your enrolment form will need to be signed by a parent or guardian. Section 120 of the Education and Care National Regulations 2011 requires the approved provider of a centre-based service must ensure that any educator at the service who is under 18 years of age:
does not work alone at the service; and is adequately supervised at all times by an educator who has attained the age of 18 years.

Students will be required to complete and pass a Working with Children Check/Police Clearance in the state or territory that they are working in prior to commencing child related work (this includes work placement).
