Government Announces 15% Pay Rise for Early Childhood Education Workers

Government Announces 15% Pay Rise for Early Childhood Education Workers

In a significant move, the Australian Government has announced a 15% pay increase for early childhood education workers. This substantial pay rise will be implemented over two years, with a 10% increase from December this year and the remaining 5% from December 2025.

Extra income for childcare workers

This progressive move is set to significantly improve the financial situation of workers in this vital sector. For an average worker receiving the award rate, this will mean a substantial extra income of $103 a week by the end of the year, increasing to $155 a week by December 2025.

Improving the Early Childhood Education Sector

The government has allocated a $3.6 billion package to fund this pay increase, with the condition that childcare centres limit their fee increases. Childcare fees cannot increase by more than 4.4% over the next 12 months from 8 August 2024, and the full funding must be passed on to staff through pay increases. The government’s commitment to improving the early childhood education sector is a positive step forward. By ensuring affordable childcare and enhancing the value placed on early childhood education workers, the government aims to provide relief to families.

What is the average salary of childhood educators in 2024?

In Australia, early childhood educators’ pay can vary based on qualifications, experience, and the type of childcare setting. An early childhood educator in Australia can earn an average salary of $60,000 to $70,000 per year. Entry-level positions start at $76,700 annually, while most experienced workers make up to $98,574 annually. With the recent announcement of a 15% pay increase for early childhood education workers, the average income for workers in this sector is set to rise, providing much-needed financial relief and recognition for their valuable contributions.
